Self-Parody Dept.

David Broder calls President Bush's call for a bipartisan commission to consider Social Security reform "surpris[ing]" and "promising." "Bush opened the door" to "bipartisan agreement."

Comments:
It appears that TNR's Michael Crowley reads this blog:

Why are you surprises? You both subscribe to the dailey DU talking points memo. The redundancy of your crowd is deafening.

I've read something from DU about exactly once, out of curiosity sometime that Slave or bilmore or you quoted from it for the umpteenth time. I doubt Broder has read it even that many times. You've probably read it more than that this week, excluding Sunday.

your denials ring as false as your previous attempts to defend Gorelick's wall....or was that SS?

Must you use words like a blunt club, rather than a knife?

(Not suggesting you use a knife, Hank.)

Robert Samuelson jumps on board the Broder Bipartisan Bandwagon in today's Post:

Could we escape this impasse? Maybe. In his State of the Union address, the president mentioned a new commission on entitlement spending -- aka the costs of the retiring baby boomers. This could be a throwaway line. But it could also suggest that the president actually wants to do something and realizes that his early attempts have failed (Social Security personal accounts) or made the problem worse (Medicare Part D).
