Graven images.

Daniel Engbar takes a stab at explaining the Islamic prohibition on representations of Mohammed. But he really doesn't tell me about what I want to know: the basis for the belief many Moslems have that such depictions are offensive. If, as Eugene Volokh suggests, the motivation matters, then I have a hard time sympathizing -- it sounds like suppression of disagreeable viewpoints. Is there a rationale that explains why non-Muslims should abstain from these actions as well?

Comments:
How come they don't protest pictures of Jesus? Or Moses? Aren't they major prophets too? Also, if I drew a picture of Aisha taking it from behind from Muhammed, but without showing Muhammed, but implying he was "in" her, is that prohibited? In the US would it be child porno?
